So check it out. A buncha crazy holigans thought up a great idea of listening to music and identifying certain traits common to specific genres as "genes". They then figured out some way to group songs specifically by these "genes". Sorta similar to BLAST (Bioinformatics search program over at NCBI that identifies similarities in genetic sequences of all organsims), but with songs. They've then written a radio program called PANDORA. check it out at http://www.pandora.com/ You type in a song or artist of your interest and it will create a personalize radiostation that plays all sorts of similar artists based on the genes of the original artist you entered. I put in desmond dekker, and it came up with a playlist that featured alton ellis, heptones, hepcat, mad lads, justin hinds and the dominos, old toots and the maytals, etc etc. You can then add more musicians to your playlist and it will generate an even larger playlist based on the "genes" you added. Check it out. really crazy concept. i've been listening to pandora all day now as i work in my genetics lab

go go gergie signing off.

I've been a fan of this site for awhile now. It can keep you busy adding more artists and narrowing down exactally what you are looking for musically. The guide us button is fun because it'll tell you why the song is playing.

Me too.

I meant to leave the office at 8 last night.

I ended up cleaning stuff up and bopping around well past midnight.

I've been on there before I couldn't find half the stuff I looked up.

this sounds like the same basic idea as launch on yahoo.com. does anyone know if pandora has any advantages over launch?

I just looked briefly at Launch and it is nothing like Pandora. Let me stress that Pandora is different from everything else because it does not analyze by genre, it anazlyzes by musical similarities. For example Pandora put on my playlist Madness "Our House". By clicking the guide us button it will tell me why the song is playing:
Based on what you've told us so far, we're playing this track because it features punk influences, mild rhythmic syncopation, meandering melodic phrasing, mixed acoustic and electric intrumentation and minor key tonality.

this is a really cool website. I typed in explosions in the sky and they gave me all these other bands that are like them and really good to.

It will throw in random shit but with good reason. Check out the guide us button which will tell you why the song played and if you hate it then click the thumbs down and that song/artist won't play again.

Wow. I'm having a blast. What a fantastically extensive bit of research and programming.
