Some friends and I would like to try (if it's even possible) to revive the Western Mass punk/ska scene. I figured I'd start with a website / forum. But I have no idea how to do this. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks.

FWIW, this messageboard and it seems like most of them, use the free open source program phpBB. I just find it easier to use what other people are using, to lessen the learning curve.

Isn't there already NE Ska???

Can you just maybe pump that one up a bit?

Yes there is neskainside.net...

the new england ska wiki is really great, and very helpful. there is a great deal of information in that site.

however as far as advertising shows, it's about as effective as trying to advertise a Syracuse show on a site dedicated to all of New York.
I've actually talked to Chris, who runs the neska site, and he will probably be helping me with the site, and we'll just link to each other.

Fortunately, no one has been silly enough yet to try to cover all of New York State. I've been pressured to do it and so have several others, but its pointless, honestly. The wider an area you try to cover, generally the more poorly you do it. That's been proven too many times.

So if you're trying to focus more narrowly on Western Mass, I can see a point to that. I'm not clear you have a critical mass of interest big enough to make it work, but I'd certainly encourage you to try.

that is exactly what I'd like to do. I've noticed that there are a lot of kids in WMass that will go to CT, Boston, Albany, Vermont, etc for shows, but they won't attend a show in WMass. I finally realized that it's because there's no single place where they can find show listings. They can look at the myspace of a band they like, but if that particular band isn't playing a show, they don't know about the show. I'm fairly good at whoring things, so I don't think I'll have a problem getting people to go to the website. I'm just technologically retarded and need to learn how to physically make a website and forum. haha.

But thank you for your encouragement.

http://www.myspace.com/nycreggaeguide

my upstate NY reggae site covers the hudson valley/albany, western ny and central ny.
http://www.myspace.com/upstateNYreggae

you can cover as wide as you want. some site is better than none.

i count on my NYC people to post shows and let me know about additions corrections
and people are very grateful for my site since there's nothing like that made by city folk. a
