The more we talk about this, the more convinced I am we need to do it.

For starters, I had no idea how many of you were graduating this year and leaving our little ska scene.

But it seems like a ska prom would be a very cool way to send you off to that big, cruel emo world out there. :P

Seriously, RazSum wanted a going away show for Vinnie anyway and we have a couple of good places to hold this. WaNoa is the most obvious place to do it. Even I-hate-theme-shows Johanna first suggested a ska prom the first time she saw WaNoa. It's certainly pretty enough. Put some candles on the tables and hang some streamers and balloons and it'd be awesome.

As I've been talking with people the last few days, we've come to a few conclusions. No set dinner involved. But the kitchen is always open at WaNoa, so its not like you can't eat anyway. It definitely has to be dress up, but I agree with Jeff of Tri-State, the dress up part needs to be noticeably more than kids do at regular shows. Not sure what that means just yet, but I agree with him on that.

Jeff pointed out this idea started with hardcore kids wearing suits and dresses at a hardcore show, which if you think about it, is kind of hilarious. But as he points out, kids wearing suits and dresses at a ska show isn't exactly newsworthy. So, we definitely need an "edge" for this. At a minimum, I'm thinking maybe requiring everyone to dress just in black and white alone? That would be different, you have to admit.

Please weigh in. This is far from a done deal and we need everyones support to pull it off ...

Considering I'm not even going to my own senior prom because of crappy people/music/dance moves, I would almost, positvily, absoluty think about considering going to it.

DO IT.

And yeah, Wa-Noa sounds like the perfect place for it.
Plus I can drag Hero up for it; he absolutely refuses to attend senior ball, but I'm sure I could manipulate him in to coming for a Ska Prom.

Seriously, why skip your senior prom? You can't find a couple people in your grade that you like that you want to hang out with for a while with music blaring and goofing off to be had?

It just seems like a stupid waste to miss something that only happens once.

That's what my Mom keeps telling me every time senior ball comes up and I mention that I'm not sure if I even want to go. I get the whole "I never went to senior ball and I've always regretted it."

My thoughts? It was high school. Nothing else that happened in high school really matters after you graduate and move on with life. Get over it.

But a ska prom.. THIS is something I could get in to.

I went to my junior/senior prom in my junior year.

It sucked.

Seriously, it was nowhere near worth what I shelled out for tux, flowers, etc.

The girl I went with (not a g/f, but a prospect [I thought]) ended up with another dude. LAME.

I didn't go senior year.

I went to my junior prom, my senior prom, and my then-girlfriend's senior prom. I had a great time at all three, but especially at my own senior prom. It was an absolutely fantastic experience.

I had a great time at my Junior and I expect I will have a great time at Senior and Junior (girlfriend is a junior) this year.

EDIT:

P.S. Danny, you can't put too much restrictions on the dress. Kids aren't gunna want to come if they don't get to show off some sports coat they got at salvo. Let kids do what they want with what they wear, but require a pants and jacket combo with tie or something like that.

You especially can't expect kids to rent suits.

My only issue with a dress-code is that it is near impossible to skank in a formal dress.

Also, I won't lie, I'm not about to go out and drop $20 or $30 on an outfit for a show that I will wear once. I'm a college student, I'm lucky if I'll drop $30 on anything.

But if this is limited to the high school seniors, then I don't have to worry, do I? 8)

I don't see Danny limiting a show. The ska scene is usually all about all ages shows and Danny tends to put on all ages shows. Limiting it to just high school seniors would seriously limit the draw on the show and seem like a diservice to the scene.

No, I'd never agree to limiting it to certain years. But that won't keep us from honoring the graduating seniors. I'm hoping this can be a new annual tradition for us. :P
