Springboarding off the "Victory Records hates iTunes" topic...

(if you picked "another service", reply and let us know!)

The only time burning a CD is good is when the band is such a sell out that they only make ten cents a CD.

Burning local music is bs. Unless the band isn't around anymore.

I buy what I can afford and really like and download music I can't afford but want to hear. I use Soulseek pretty much exclusivly at home. At school I can't use Soulseek so I use DC++ and I've tried Torrents.

I only download if i want a sample of a few songs by a new band, or i've listened to a cd and only like one or two songs from the cd, other than that I always buy.

I used Kazaa once upon a time to sample bands, but that was well before myspace, purevolume and other options made it so much easier for bands to put their stuff out there.

I don't have the space for a huge mp3 library, anyway, and the majority of mine are downloaded off the band's website or profile.

I use Soulseek for finding new and old bands. It's mostly stuff you can't just go out and buy that I download. Lots of out of print kinda stuff.

I do rip a lot of cd's onto my computer though. I'm trying to figure out how to rip my vinyl into mp3s as well. I use torrents mostly for downloading games and other apps, music rarely.

I'm lucky that between the radio station and booking shows, I get a lot of CDs easily (ska and otherwise). But I still buy quite a few CDs, mostly at shows I attend and/or book. The rest I buy online or at Sound Garden.

I tried Kazaa and Soulseek, but found them very annoying. Plus, my musical taste is so obscure to most Americans, it was mostly a waste of my time anyway. Most bands are offering enough "free" music these days, there is really no excuse for stealing. That's my take on it.

That depends on if you view stealing it or as previewing. A lot of kids especially dealing with bands in more "underground" scenes will download and then buy the actual album mostly cause they see a need to support a smaller band rather. I'd say it's stealing if you download a small bands album and never give em a cent for anything. I wouldn't call it stealing if you are downloading the latest Nickleback or whatever kids are into these days.

So the consensus appears that if you pay for music, you want a physical object to show for it.

I use our tunes. Which is a great program for college students it lets you take peoples itunes shared folder. See here at Fredonia its hard to download music so its very easy as long as the music is on someones shared itunes folder. Considering this is a music school thats not ussually an issue. Seen everything from enya to ed gein.

I use Ares...old fashioned i know...but its only for major bands, local bands, if i like, i buy the cd, or just check out the myspace/purevolume. Burning local music....is sheerly lowbrow and just plain bad
