Local Ska Band Changes Direction
Rochester, NY, Saturday, April 1st, 2006 - In a move sure to confuse their longtime fans, local ska band mrs. skannotto today announced their intention to remodel themselves as a mariachi band.
The move comes as a shock to the band's legions of fans. "Wait, they did what?" asks Steve "Twitch" Mills when told the news. "I just put together their CD release show. Now they're a mariachi band? I'm so confused!"
Other fans had similar reactions. "They've lost their minds," says Eric Metzler. "This is definitely weird," agrees Chris Page, "I mean, the leap from ska to mariachi is a pretty big one."
The band apparently came to the decision after watching the movie "The Three Amigos" following their recent CD release show at Milestones Music Room. Specific details about how exactly the idea came about are still fuzzy. "We got pretty drunk," says trumpeter Justin Lloyd, "I really don't remember much about that night, but when I woke up I was in a mariachi outfit and I had the sheet music to the Mexican Hat Dance." Guitarist Alex Charissis tells a similar story. "I was drinking tequilla shots three at a time," he told us. "Who knows what I agreed to?"
"Mariachi is the new rap," says drummer Tim Boss. "We thought we should make our move now. You know, corner the market." Other members of the band agreed. "If it means I get to wear a huge sombrero on stage then I say go for it," says singer Gordon Penniston.
"The outfits will certainly be interesting," says bassist Dan Carter. Trombone player Steve Jones agrees. "I've always wanted to own a frilly shirt, and now I can!"
The band plans to continue selling their new album "bet you didn't see this coming", but they are already reworking some of their songs to fit their new sound, including "I Wish I was Speedy Gonzolez", "Just A Fiesta", and "I'd Sleep With You, But I'd Rather Drink Tequilla". Stay tuned to
