I wasn't sure if they were in my age group.

I guess I should have figured it out when they weren't super cynical.

Mike has that effect on people.

Fortunately, I already had a thick, crusty hide to protect my big squishy heart from his Cynic-Ray when I met him.

1) Michael. Westfield, NJ.
2) Playing shows with other Ska bands
3) I don't listen to Ska.
4) It's much more inviting and friendly than the Metal scene, IMO
5) Sharing the good times with friends and making new ones

Erik Michael Schroeder, aka Skooch, Lord Skoochie, Brother Anubis Re, Vedant Bhagat, etc….Lifetime NJ resident. I am a 36 year old married father of two, one of the founding members of Inspecter 7, founding member of Silver Dollar and former member of the Hub City Stompers. I play Tenor and Soprano Saxophone, enjoy Indian Food and long walks on the beach. I am also a devotee of His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. I have also been in The Brimstones (1998-2003) and currently head up The Cosmic Brotherhood of Ra (est 2001)

I got into Ska after hearing the Skatalites “Stepping Out” Live cassette back in the 80’s and returning it to the record store…. I heard it, didn’t get it, heard The Specials and Madness and then promptly went back to the record store and bought it again. I have been hooked on Jamaican music ever since. I couldn’t possibly list all of my favorite Ska bands but you can rest assured that the majority of my collection is Skatalites based and on Trojan, Treasure Isle, Studio One, etc…. I am a huge fan of Tenor Titans like Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso and also really enjoy Jackie Opel, Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker, etc…. Beyond that I enjoy the Two-Tone era bands like the Specials, Madness, Bad Manners, The Body Snatchers, The Selecter, etc… and also get into some of the 90’s era Euro-Ska like Mark Foggo, Mr.Review, No Sports and others. I enjoy the modern day Trad Revival bands and keep my eyes and ears open for them all the time. Ska-Punk and Ska-Core are not really my thing but I can respect the fact that people are trying to do their own thing and create something different with Ska.

What do I like about the Ska Scene? Good question, I like the sense of community when it is there and like that people can dance together and enjoy their time under the same roof. I can see a big age gap however which needs to be addressed as I think we all need to respect each other and our opinions and not simply shut each other down for being “Trad” or “Ska-Core” or whatever other label people want to use. In the end, if we stick together we can maintain a good scene for people of all ages to play in and enjoy.. I always loved that I could grab the nearest girl for a dance and not have it be about anything other than dancing.. I think Madness summed it up best with their “f*ck Art, Let’s Dance” philosophy. Go to shows, enjoy yourself, pull the stick out of your ass and let’s keep this going for a long time..that’s the way it needs to be.

My favorite moments have been the two times that I have been invited to play on stage with the Skatalites…. Playing Tenor next to Tommy McCook was the best thing to ever happen to me at a Ska show…period. It was also cool playing with and/or meeting Buster Bloodvessel from Bad Manners, Brad and Lynval from the Specials, Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger from the English Beat, Lord Tanamo, Pauline Black from The Selecter, etc…. Many years of Inspecter 7 have yielded many stories so if you want to hear more you can ask me at the next gig. Buy me a Diet Coke and I will chew your ear off for hours.
