Grange hails Lloyd Knibb as world-class drummer

Sunday, May 15, 2011

CULTURE Minister Olivia 'Babsy' Grange Friday hailed Lloyd Knibb as a world-class drummer and has encouraged young musicians to aspire to the standard set by the founding Skatalites member.

"Lloyd Knibb we will remember as a world-class drummer and the man who was largely responsible for the birth of the Ska beat," said Grange. "His Skatalites bandmates would tell you that Lloyd, who was an original member of the world-famous band, was the consummate drummer who never failed at his trade and delighted audiences with his drum solos."

KNIBB… died last Thursday 1/1

Knibb, who was based in Boston, USA, died of liver cancer at his family home in Kingston on Thursday evening. He was 80.

Grange, who also has responsibility for entertainment, said she was deeply saddened by the news of the death of "another of Jamaica's great musicians" and said that Knibb was "a special member of perhaps the greatest band that Jamaica has produced".

His passing, she said, has left a void which will not be easily filled.

"I am encouraging young musicians though, especially drummers, to aspire to the standard set by Lloyd Knibb, a musician of pure class and a gentleman," said Grange.

She expressed sympathy to Knibb's widow, Enid; his five children, seven grandchildren and great-grandchild.

Lloyd will be missed. I had the privilege to tour with the Skatalites 5 times.
He was a very compassionate man with a heart of gold to play for his fans.
He was also very humble and kind hearted. I hope to see him again upstairs,
playing with all the greats that have once spot lighted on stage.
