I work at Wegmans, and as such I come into contact with a huge number of people. I work with tons of kids from different backgrounds, and there is one thing that I've noticed about people's musical opinions that bugs the hell out of me.

I was talking to a co-worker about music, and he told me he listened to some punk. I asked him which bands, and he told me The Used, Story of the Year, and Good Charlotte.

I'm not trying to be an elitist f*ck but maybe someone could shine some light on this subject that is a source of much frustration for me. Maybe everyone has a different definition of punk, but I cant believe that word is used by the media, or at least large numbers of kids, to describe mainstream emo-pop.

I'm not even pointing hate at those bands, hell, I even like The Starting Line and some other mainstream pop bands, but what the f*ck? They arent punk bands at all.

When, where, and why did this become such a widely accepted misconception?

There's a difference between taking music too seriously and simply speaking out of ignorance.

Also, I do take music seriously. If you put as many hours and dollars into playing and recording and driving as I had, you would too.

(this was not meant to sound like an asshole, though I think I probably am.)

You think you have put more effort in t music than I have? Do you have any idea how much I listen to/spend on/drive for music? Dude I seriously booked shows for bands you haven't even heard of. I helped reintroduce this goddamn city to ska.

To say that I have not done as much as you is laughable. I just think that you should let things like that go because people will always be like that. We all were at one point.

I love you Mike. The net doesn't lend well to tones so I assume my post sounded like a lash out, which I assure you, it was not. And yes, I know you've booked lots of shows and all that. :-p

The point I was making is that, this goes along with some of the attitudes that have put music in the mainstream where it is now. I think we know what I'm talking about.

i saw this kid at my brother's baseball game and he was wearing a ramones shirt. i asked him if he like the ramones and he said yeah. i asked him why and he said "cuz they're like fall out boy." it's the world that we live in. i don't like it either.

furthermore, since when does fall out boy even sound remotely like the ramones? other than constant root notes on bass and use of power chords, they have nothing in common.

and led zep did make a ska/reggae-ish song. it's called d'yer mak'er. that sean kingston kid ripped it off in oe of his songs.

How can you talk about Sean Kingston ripping them off when they ripped off my name. Adding that apostrophe didn't throw me off one bit.
