I was under the mistaken notion it was a Puerto Rican place, but the owner is actually from the Dominican Republic. He's also crazy into salsa music. I was talking to the grrl behind the counter about that. And I was explaining to her about salsa ska and promised to come back with a burned cd of same next week.

Its just now occurring to me that we should be recruiting places like this to our cause. Same with the Jamaican food places around town. They could eventually help sponsor a Latin ska artist, for example, or maybe even just help supply food for bands at a show. It just seems cross-promotion like that would really give us a higher profile and break us out of this ghetto of being pegged as quirky indie pop.

I also dream of the day that someone like the Southwest Community Center would help co-sponsor someone like Hepcat or Fishbone, for example. I really think that'd help a lot ...

Where on Westcott St. is it and what are the hours? I'd like to check it out.
